Dovlatov
2018 / feature film / RUS-PL-RS

About
With cinematography by Oscar-nominated Łukasz Żal, awarded the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution, this is epic, intellectual historical cinema. The film portrays several days in the life of the outstanding Russian writer Sergei Dovlatov in early November 1971.
Dovlatov is an active writer, yet he has nowhere to publish — none of the Soviet Union’s publishing houses are willing to accept his work. He is furce to carry out increasingly absurd assignments imposed by the Writers’ Union, as without membership no one will print his texts. This vicious circle of powerlessness blocks his path to creative development.
It is a story not only about Dovlatov, but also about the people who helped shape him into a great writer, including his friend Joseph Brodsky.
The film raises the eternal issue of the Russian and European culture – the issue of moral choice.
